Diddy Didn’t Happen

Last Friday, I was scheduled to be backstage at Sean John*. I was super excited to be attending the closing show of New York Fashion Week.

I fantasized that Diddy and I would meet, he’d be captivated by my charm, and then whisk me away to the star-studded soiree.

It would play out like that R. Kelly/Jay Z collabo:

After the show it's the after party and
After the party is the hotel lobby and
After the Belve then it's probably Cris…

But that didn’t happen. In fact, the closest I got to the Sean John show was a pizzeria on the corner of 22nd Street & 6th Ave. I was grabbing a bite there when I got a call from MAC telling me that there were no female models in the show, and therefore no need for MAC makeup. I was bummed, but also exhausted from my travels; so I caught an early train back to Philly.

So sorry, beauties. I know you were anxious for me to dish the Diddy dirt. C'est la vie.

If you absolutely need a Puffy fix, Glamour.com has an article entitled "Diddy knows pretty," in which the hip-hop mogul/designer shares his observations on what makes a woman irresistible. Here’s an excerpt:

Why he named his perfume Unforgivable Woman:
“It’s about being unapologetic. It’s about having swagger. Confidence is such a sexy, sexy quality.”

Makeup trend he’s so over:
“Red lipstick just isn’t working for me. It might be good for an awards show, but it’s not hot to kiss. I love natural lip color—that’s always a good look!”

Biggest beauty obsession:
“Sugar Bath Cubes by Fresh. I take a bath every night. I love the way they make my skin feel. I have very soft skin—go ahead, touch it!”

For the rest of the interview, click here.

*Is it just me, or does the Sean John Fall 2008 collection look a little effeminate? I'm not judging...just sayin'.

Lovely Gifts For Valentine’s Day

Let’s be honest - when it comes to gift-giving, most men are clueless. So if you haven’t already dropped some major hints, don’t be surprised when your man comes home with a tired box of Russell Stover chocolates.

That’s why I am an staunch advocate of buying treats for oneself on Valentine’s Day. Whether you’re in a long-term relationship or presently unattached, there’s no shame in purchasing these lovely gifts for yourself.

Here are some Spoiled Pretty picks:

Fresh Cannabis Rose Eau de Parfum: Fresh’s newest fragrance is the ultra-sensual and completely intoxicating floral counterpart to the highly popular Cannabis Santal Collection. Top notes burst with the captivating aroma of Bulgarian roses infused with pomegranate flower and Italian bergamot. An alluring blend of cannabis accord, sheer jasmine, and rich dark chocolate make the heart of this sultry scent truly intoxicating, while base notes of white musk, patchouli, and oolong tea leave a lasting sensual finish. ($75).

Avon Valentine's Day Mini Hand Creams: Available in Vita Moist, Silicone Glove, Soft & Sensual, and Intensive. (.99 each)

Lush Silky Perfect Match: Includes Lush’s very popular Silky Underwear solid perfume with jasmine and vetivert and their equally popular Alkmaar soap in a special heart shape. Making these perfect matches even more precious, the packaging is 100% biodegradable. In fact, if you plant the box with someone special, you can watch your love grow – literally. The entire box contains real seeds and when you plant it you will grow beautiful wild flowers to enjoy together. ($19.95)

Kissable Couture Valentine’s Collection: Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Kissable Couture adds three more shades to its repertoire. New colors include Fantasies (Red Rose), Dreams (Soft Pink, Very Airy, Truly a Hint of Color), and Bliss (Mauve, Rose Pink). ($22 each)

Noodle & Boo All of my Heart: This heart-shaped soap is not only fun, but has a rich and creamy lather that gently cleans delicate skin leaving it soft and supple. Made with 100% pure vegetable oil, it does not contain the dehydrating detergents or irritating surfactants in most soap today. Wholesome oatmeal and aloe carefully soothe, while sweet almond oil and nutrient-rich milk protein moisturize skin. ($15)

Suzanne Aux Bains Relaxing Organic Massage Oil: Pamper your skin with this natural, nourishing massage oil with a captivating scent. This soothing massage oil softens the body while relaxing the mind for a spa experience right in your bathroom. Perfect for all skin types, especially dry or sensitive skin, this quick-absorbing, golden-hued oil from France is certified organic. It helps ease muscle tension with Jasmine, Mandarin, Ylang Ylang, Chamomile and Lavender essential oils, while a combination of organic Apricot, Sesame and Jojoba essential oils protect and soften the skin. Kirstin, the beauty behind Saffron Rouge, says it’s her favorite body oil. ($37)

Philosophy Candy Hearts: Contains three mouth-watering flavored lip shines with sweet-nothings written right on the tubes. Say "be mine" with melon daiquiri, "ask me" with vanilla birthday cake, and "love you" with raspberry sorbet. ($25)

Jaqua Pink Champagne and Cocoa Buttercream bath and body products: Indulge in bubbly and chocolate without the hangover or the calories. And to help achieve the perfect bath treat for Valentine's Day, Jaqua is giving you 25% off their Pink Champagne and Cocoa Buttercream fragrances. Enter promotion code VALDAY2A at checkout. Offer expires Feb 13th.

How Diddy Does Fashion Week

On Friday, I'll be backstage with MAC at Sean John. So here's a little something to whet your appetite...

In the March issue of Marie Claire, this bad boy combs through the contents of his Fashion Week survival kit – and discloses why these products made the cut.

1) Louis Vuitton Bequia Bag: “Gotta give it up for the LV. Their stuff is tight. These bags are stylish yet masculine – like me.”

2) Sean John Classic Aviators: “It’s all about style – and these shades add instant swagger.”

3) Fiji Water: “It tastes so pure and keeps me hydrated when I’m running around.”

4) Unforgivable Eau de Toilette: “My scent is a part of me; it’s what’s left behind when I exit a room. I never leave home without smelling right.”

5) Fresh Sugar Lemon Body Lotion: “This lotion exfoliates my skin like nothing else.”

6) Proactiv Skincare: “I’m always in the spotlight, so I can’t be walking around with acne. This keeps my skin in check.”

7) Plantronics Bluetooth Headset: “I only have two hands. This device keeps them free to get the bigger things done.”

8) Luxury Spa Ginger Prosperity Air Freshener: “These keep any hotel room smelling a little bit like home, no matter where in the world I am.”

9) IPod Touch: “Music keeps my creative energy flowing.”

10) Xotics Skin Therapy Aftershave: “This provides the moisture I need to keep my shaves looking right.”

11) Trident Strawberry Fusion Gum: “I’m a strawberry guy – ain’t no shame in that. You should always have fresh breath.”

Spoiled Pretty's Holiday Gift Guide

I know that many of you have started (and finished) your holiday shopping by now. So I apologize for the delay of this post. However, if you’re a procrastinator like me – you figure that there’s thirteen perfectly good days left to pick up what hasn’t already been snatched off the shelves. So, to the slackers of the world (you know who you are)…this one’s for you.

This is Spoiled Pretty’s Holiday Gift Guide, ’07 edition.

Fragrance is a very personal thing. Unless you know the recipient’s favorite scent (or he/she has requested something specific), fragrance can be a tricky gift. Even if you know the “notes” that the person likes, perfumes and colognes react to differently on everyone…so it could be a real hit, or a big miss. Instead, try The Sephora Scent Sampler; it includes samples of popular fragrances, plus a gift voucher of equal value that can be redeemed at any Sephora store for a full size bottle of any one of the samples included. Available for her (includes 10 samples) and for him (includes 8 samples).

Makeup, again, is a very personal thing. I typically don’t recommend buying cosmetics unless you really know the recipient. But even then…I mean, would you want someone just buying you some random makeup? I didn’t think so. Me neither. But if you insist on doing so, opt for a palette. Around the holidays, makeup companies flood the market with kits and gift sets in a plethora of price ranges. So it shouldn’t be hard finding one. The key, though, is to find one that includes products and colors that are universally flattering. You really can’t go wrong with Sephora's Supermodel Kit, a glamourous gift set filled with products worn by top models at Fashion Week Live. The set includes Stila Lip Glaze, Make Up For Ever Diamond Shadow, Smashbox Photo Finish Primer, Smashbox O-GLOW, Dior Diorshow Mascara, and Sephora Blush Me! - all in a chic black sequined Sephora clutch. Or you could buy a lip gloss set. I love Stila’s Gift of Glaze set because it includes two limited-edition shades (nutmeg spice, candy cane) and favorites grapefruit, apricot, vanilla, and brown sugar. What woman would balk at that? You’d be hard pressed to find one.

Now onto bath & body products…there are so many pre-assembled gift sets out there right now – and while it’s a very sensible gift, some are just so generic and cheesy (especially those that come in a ceramic sleigh or awful wicker concoction). So look for sets with unique, pretty packaging. I absolutely adore the Sugar Tart Gift Set from Fresh; this festive set includes Sugar Lemon Eau de Parfum, Sugar Lemon Bath and Shower Gel, and Sugar Lemon Body Lotion in an elegant red, gold, and silver box. It’s a Sephora exclusive and it’s already sold out online – so visit your local store and hope you get lucky.

Finally, there’s gift cards. They’re practical and all, but c’mon…nothing says “I don’t really know you” or “I didn’t give this munch thought” quite like a gift card. All it takes is an extra step or two to show the recipient you truly care. Try a gift card to a nail salon, along with L’Occitane’s Lavender Hand Cream and a bottle of Pink Quartz Nail Shimmer from Bobbi Brown. Or slip a gift card into a chic cosmetic clutch, like this festive one from Stephanie Johnson.

These simple suggestions should help you find the gift guaranteed to spoil someone (or yourself) pretty. Happy shopping!

Hell Has Officially Frozen Over

On Friday night, after returning home from a night out with friends, my husband took a long, hard look at me and asked, “Honey, when’s the last time you exfoliated?”

I was aghast at the question, considering this was a man who, just a few years earlier, had been cleansing his face with the same bar of Irish Spring he used to wash his body. He has since graduated to less archaic methods of skincare, but since when was he an expert in the art of exfoliation?

After taking a long, hard look at my dull complexion in the mirror, I reluctantly agreed that my husband might be on to something – so I asked what he recommended. He handed me his Energizing Face Scrub by Nivea For Men, and told me to give it a try.

As you all know, I’m not above using men’s products – so I applied some to my freshly-washed face and worked the product in in circles. The fine scrub particles are not for the faint of heart – so if your skin is on the sensitive side, you may find this to be a bit too abrasive. Otherwise, it’s great at unclogging pores and getting rid of excess impurity build up.

My husband’s Energizing Face Scrub did just what it promised – it smoothed my complexion by lifting off rough, dead skin. The “fine scrub particles” were a little more aggressive than I’m used to - so I think I’ll stick to my Fresh Sugar Face Polish and steal, I mean borrow, his Nivea Face Scrub once a week. And if he ever gets stingy and I have to go buy my own, it’s only $6.

Available at Drugstore.com, Amazon.com, CVS, Walgreen's, and Rite Aid.

It's Unanimous

According to Lucky Magazine and its readers, the new and undisputed beauty heavyweight champion of the world is Sephora.

For the first annual Lucky Shopping Awards (featured in the November issue), the magazine gives props to the best department stores, boutiques, chain stores, and websites.

"Sephora has become the definitive one-stop shop," says beauty edito Christina Mueller. They really do have everything: Fresh, Ojon, Stella McCartney's organic skincare - plus high-tech dermatologist lines lik Dr. Brandt Skincare and N.V. Perricone M.D. Cosmeceuticals. In New York branches, you can find Anastasia brow studios.

Sephora Trivia: Sephora is the combination two words—Sephos and Zipporah. Sephos was the term for all things pretty in ancient Greece and Zipporah was the name of Moses’ wife who was renowned for her exceptional gorgeousness. Put the two together and, voila, you’ve got my beauty Mecca's moniker.

Good Clean Fun

Sometimes, it's super-fun getting dirty. Shouldn’t it be as enjoyable getting clean again? With these soap stars, it can be!

Soap Leaves by Trace Elements
Only Mother Nature could form soaps this beautiful. Genuine dried and cured leaves form a pretty, latice frame for a gentle soap resin that has been mixed according to a secret Thai formula. Each honey-scented soap leaf will last for one to two washings. Available in Ivory or Green. Box of 20.

Sapone da Viaggio Assorted Gift Soap Set by Tocca
A charming gift set of three Sapone bar soaps in Stella (Blood Orange), Florence(Orris Rose), and Cleopatra (Grapefruit Cucumber), Sapone Da Viaggio makes the perfect gift. A gentle, moisture-rich bar soap that uses key ingredients like Kukui Nut oil, blue-green algae extract and Vitamin E to hydrate, firm and repair skin, leaving it soft and glowing.

Bar Soap by Pure & Basic
It was only recently discovered that green tea has deodorant properties that are surprisingly effective. In formulating their exclusive soaps, Pure & Basic used Green Tea extracts that provide natural deodorant protection. For the first time, health-conscious consumers can buy a gentle deodorant soap that really works. Ingredients include tea tree oil, lotus leaves, and shea butter. Available in five fragrances: Fresh Fig, Green Tea, Honey Shea Butter, White Tea, and Wild Banana Vanilla (my fav!).

La Source Triple-Milled Soap by Crabtree & Evelyn
La Source cleansing bars are formulated with shea butter to moisturize and condition your skin. The relaxing sea air fragrance smells so good, I get compliments from friends and strangers.

Original Soaps by Fresh
These soaps have a pure vegetable oil base enhanced with nourishing shea butter. Because the bars are milled twice, there are no air pockets - which makes the soap dense, luxurious, and long-lasting. My favorite scents are Verbena, Vanilla, and Mangosteen.

Let's Circulate Salt Rub Soap by Origins
Massaging nubs and purifying Dead Sea Salts buffered in moisture-grabbing Glycerin lather up to release surface toxins and get positive energy circulating throughout your whole being.

Exfoliating Body Soap by L'Occitane
Enriched with exfoliating apricot kernel powder, nourishing grape-seed oil and revitalizing organic grape juice from Provence, this exfoliating soap cares for your skin and reveals all its beauty. It smoothes rough areas and effectively sloughs away dead cells and traces of ink, adhesive bandages, self-tanners, etc.

Sweet, But Tarte

I’m a marketing gal, so I can understand the appeal of Tarte Lipgloss. Each dual-ended gloss has one sheer side, one shimmery – the duo can be snapped apart so you can customize your ideal gloss pairing. And with adorable names like Romeo & Juliet, Cliff & Clair, and Baby & Johnny – who could resist?

But while the packaging is cute and clever, the truth is that Tarte Lipgloss is somewhat lacking in the lipgloss department. I have to admit that the non-tacky formula is refreshing and the color pairings are nice...unfortunately, the gloss falls short in many key areas.

First, the color payout is rather disappointing. If you’re looking for a very sheer gloss, then maybe this works for you. But I find that I need to coat my lips in a layer of sheer lip pencil, like Stila Glaze Lip Liner to get the color I originally thought came in the Tarte Lipgloss tube. Secondly, the gloss doesn’t last long; when I wear it, I constantly find myself having to re-apply. At first, I assumed this was a result of its non-sticky texture – but I have since purchased similar formulas (e.g. - Fresh Lip Shine) with superior staying power. Finally, if you’re going to call your product a gloss, then it should actually be glossy, right? Tarte Lipgloss is more creamy than glossy.

So if you’re looking for a sheer creamy balm, then this “gloss” is perfect for you. But for my money, I’d rather the manufacturer put a little more thought into the product and spent less time on the packaging.
