Pin-Up Look

So back in december i took these pictures,i was going for a less dramatic version of this look by singer Eleftheria Eleftheriou.

Had to do some type of Pin-upy face lol.
you'll notice i love to play w/ colors!
I did one pin curl on the top to be in the middle of the 2 hair-styles.
Face: Revlon Colorstay mixed w/ Peter Thomas Roth foundation.
Eyes: Prestige liquid eyeliner & Sephora mascara
Lips: Maybelline red lipstick & clear gloss

So its really simple like i said i was going for a less dramatic look so since the lips & eyes were already bold i didn't want to over-do it with eyeshadows & blush. Plus one pin-curl!
So there you have a simple & quick retro-style look!

Καλησπέρα /Kalispera!

A little history of dentistry.

As with most things, the first try is not always a success.

The same can be said about dentistry. The earliest writings we have on the subject are from about 5000 B.C. Way back then all we have is people speculation on what in the world was the cause of a toothache.

Later on, about 300 B.C. we start to get treatments for toothaches listed. Even such noted historical figures as Hippocrates and Aristotle got in on the act.

In the old west it is recorded that the barber doubled as the local dentist. The word "dentist" being very loosely used as most of what the barber did was to simply take teeth that had gone bad.

Personally I can't imagine what it must have been like. I know how my teeth feel after just one day of not brushing them. What must they have felt like after not brushing them for YEARS?!

Oh well, over 7,000 years after the first recorded ideas of dentistry we now have amazing new technologies that make going to the dentist a
whole lot better then it used to be.

The Naked Truth

I have received a few emails asking about my professional credentials. What makes me a beauty "expert"? I even received a few emails asking me about my personal story.
I am not an exhibitionist! I can be a pretty private twenty-something girl. So standing naked in front of a crowd or in this case the Internet doesn't come easy for me. But, I do want to share my experiences with you. So here it

This Week

Geia sas!
This week has been stressful but had some good points, my mom & i made a lentil vegetable soup & a Portuguese white bean soup in which we used this lacinato kale.
I love the leaves, they're so pretty & unique to others!
(yummy too)

We also bought Bragg Liquid Aminos from our health food store, we've heard about it for a while so decided to try out the spray. Turns out its pretty good in things like our lentil soup.

That was so good! Its nice to have a little extra protein too.

I've needed a lot of yoga this week for stress relief also.

Looking forward to a better next week & hopefully my weekend of work goes by quickly!

Switching from soda to sports drinks.

I have many patients who have developed bad oral habits over the years.
One of these bad habits is drinking lots of soda pop.
Soda is terrible on your teeth.
I try to get people to stop drinking the stuff as much as I can.
Some folks have decided that they will kick the soda habit by going to something
much more healthy for them.
The stuff they decide to drink instead is sports drinks (gatorade, poweraid, red bull, etc.)
They see the commercials and see professional athletes drinking this stuff and think that it must be good for them.
Not so fast. The following is a study from the university of Iowa. and the results may shock you.

“The University of Iowa researchers covered extracted teeth with nail polish. They left bare two patches on each tooth, one on the enamel and one on the root. Then they dunked the teeth in test tubes filled with regular Coke, Diet Coke, Gatorade, Red Bull, or 100% apple juice. Every five hours, the researchers refreshed the beverages. After 25 hours, they examined the teeth with a microscope. All of the beverages eroded the bare spots on the teeth. But different beverages had significantly different effects. On the enamel, Gatorade was significantly more corrosive than Red Bull and Coke. Red Bull and Coke, in turn, were significantly more corrosive than Diet Coke and apple juice. On the roots of the teeth, Gatorade was more corrosive than Red Bull. Coke, apple juice, and Diet Coke followed in that order.”

So there you have it. People switching from soda pop to sports drinks thinking that they are helping their teeth are actually doing MORE damage to their teeth then before. Be careful what people tell you is better for you. It just may be worse.

Nefertiti-A Novel

As promised my review of the book Nefertiti by Michelle Moran
(without spoiling it for anyone).
The book is told by Mutnodjmet, the younger sister of Nefertiti. It is about her life just as much as Nefertiti's which i liked. It follows their lives starting at their early teen years.
It has love and loss like any good book, but i definitely felt the loss weigh a little heavier in this book than i expected. When dealing with history and things that happened at the time it gives you a chance to see what it might have been like for them.
Though this book is based history every detail in the story is not factual as that would be completely impossible without Mutnodjmet herself talking to the author. But i do feel for the most part it feels like the majority of the story could have happened. I don't like when a historical book feels like the author didn't even try for example when they use modern day swear words in their book..like WHAT that drives me crazy haha, but luckily i felt like this book was well written. Over all i really did enjoy reading it though i liked her next book The Heretic Queen better but they are two different stories.

Characters:
Nefertiti-Queen of Egypt
Mutnodjmet-sister of Nefertiti
Amunhotep IV/Akhenaten-Pharaoh of Egypt
Kiya-secondary wife of Pharaoh
Meritaten-daughter of Nefertiti & Akhenaten
Ankhesenamun-daughter of Nefertiti & Akhenaten
Vizier Ay-father of Nefertiti & Mutnodjmet
Queen Tiye- mother of Amunhotep IV/Akhenaten
General Nakhtmin-general in Pharaoh's army
General Horemheb-general in Pharaoh's army

Also an update on my Egyptology in 2011 post, concerning the tomb KV63 they speculated belonged to Queen Ankesenamun here is a cut & paste article about it:
After excavating the tomb KV63 it is speculated that it was designed for Ankhesenamun due to its proximity to the tomb of Tutankhamun's KV62. Also found in the tomb were coffins (one with an imprint of a woman on it), women's clothing, jewellery and natron. Fragments of pottery bearing the partial name Paaten were also in the tomb. The only royal person known to bear this name was Ankhesenamun, whose name was originally Ankhesenpaaten. However there were no mummies found in KV63 so it remains just speculation.
Bummer i was hoping she was in there!

Formula 303

Anyone ever hear about Formula 303?
I know most of you guys are like what it sounds like a cheap weight-loss pill or something lol, but its actually a natural relaxant.

Here are the ingredients from the website:
Valerian Root (Valeriana officinalis) - used for centuries to calm upset nerves and for treating mood problems, pain and headache. Today homeopaths and herbalists use Valerian root for its antispasmodic, calmative, tranquilizing, carminative (good for upset stomach and digestion) and pain relieving effects. (approximately 264 mg)
Passion Flower (Passiflora incarnata) - discovered in 1569 it is primarily used as a sedative or nervine to combat excess nervousness and anxiety, to tranquilize, and to promote sleep; as an anodyne, anti-spasmodic and anti-convulsant to treat dysmenorrhea, muscle cramps, and so forth. (approximately 132 mg)
Magnesium - is one of the most important essential minerals to promote proper nerve function. It is a key element in the stabilization of nerve cells, without which, the nerves would be in a constant state of excitation (a state known as tetany.) (approximately 65 mg)

I heard about this from my uncle since my aunt was taking it for stress & it helped. I have been having some bad stress/anxiety regarding school & stuff plus i don't sleep well at all so when i read that it helped people with sleep i was happy too. So i just started taking 2 at night before bed 3 nights ago. The first & second night i definitely noticed it helped me sleep, the third night i was awake a lot but it would probably have been worse had i not taken it. So i can tell it does work as a relaxant & i love that its natural & i don't have to feel bad for taking medicine to help me get some peace.

So if anyone is having any similar issues i recommend trying this before medicating!
Got it at earthturns.

People often ask about veneers. Their number one concern is what exactly happens to the teeth that the veneers will be placed on. This video will hopefully clear that up.

1/2 off brain surgery!

Who in their right mind would answer an ad for 1/2 off of a brain surgery?
Probably no one.
Why?
Because you want it done right. Your brain is important.
Whenever people are getting major surgeries done, you always hear them say that they got the best doctor they could find. You never hear them say that they got the cheapest.

So why do people jump so quickly for a cut rate dentist?
Please do not misunderstand. I realize that your teeth are not as important as your brain. However, if you like having a nice smile and if you do not want to have problems down the road with the same teeth over and over again you may want to look for the quality instead of the freebie.

Dental Implants

When we talk to people about implants there is a lot of hesitation because people really do not know what is involved in getting an implant. If your tooth is already gone then its really very simple. If you still have a tooth in the spot where the implant needs to go then things can be a bit more challenging but its still not too bad. Here is a little, 30 second, video that shows an implant procedure.

Cinema Gallery: 200 MORE Movie Images, Part 1 of 5

I am doing this only because (a) I enjoy it and (b) Movieman over at The Dancing Image let me know that I had a particular talent at this frame-grabbing business (he said that my previous 200 images in my Cinema Gallery were among his favorite movie blog posts ever, which is quite a compliment, coming from him). So, for 2010, I'm contributing 200 more entries towards my CINEMA GALLERY. I hope

Three movies on the ball field, in one minute flat

I've been wanting to post these athletic film pieces for months now, and now that I have very little time to compose a preferably detailed new post on filmicability, it seems like a perfect opportunity to do so. Will Tribble has a blog here and these three movies I include here are among his many film outputs (which I have yet to delve into, in all honesty, even though he recommends on his You

When should may baby get his/her first tooth?

There is nothing much cuter then an infants big gummy smile. After a while however, parents start to ask the question, "When are my babies first teeth going to start coming in"?

Below is a chart showing not only when the first teeth will come in but when they will come out as well. The first tooth to come in, is typically, the lower central incisor. The last should be the back molars. A quick way to check and see that your youngster has all of their teeth in is to count them. A full set of baby teeth will equal out to be 10 teeth on the top and a matching 10 teeth on the bottom.

Oatmeal Spice Pancakes

These are my favorite pancakes, my mom made these & they were amazing; so full of flavor!
She found this recipe in a spice magazine.
Oatmeal Spice Pancakes
3/4 cup oat flour (grind 1 cup whole oats in food processor)
1 cup all-purpose flour
2 Tbsp. sugar
1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/4 soda
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
pinch freshly ground nutmeg
3/4 tsp. salt
3 Tbsp. butter, melted
1 1/4 cups buttermilk
1 cup cooked oatmeal
1 Tbsp. honey
2 large eggs
Mix flour, oat flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, & salt in large bowl. In small bowl stir melted butter, buttermilk, cooked oatmeal, honey & eggs together until thoroughly combined. Gently fold the wet ingredients into dry ingredients only until combined. Don't over mix.
Heat pan over med-high heat until sizzling spray with non-stick spray. Add the batter in 1/4 cup mounds. Flip when bubbling.
We used agave as our syrup & some fresh juice from an orange. This beats the heck out of a regular pancake.
Enjoy!

Country Strong

My sister & i went to see Country Strong tonight & really liked it! Probably my favorite song from it was 'Give in to Me' sang by Garrett Hedlund & Leighton Meester. He is a really good actor & i love the way he looks at her in this video: (he just needs to shave ha)
He is so darn cute & seems like a decent person & not your typical Hollywood guy. I've watched some interviews with him & am impressed. I was a fan of him in the movie Troy as Achilles' cousin & in Four Brothers as well as Georgia Rule so i'm glad to see him get more lead roles. :)
Anyway good movie, if you like country go see it!

Leighton did a great job too! This is the kinda music she should sing.

First Impressions: Olay Total Effects 7

Geia sas everyone!
I've been looking for a good facial moisturizer that also was for anti-aging, not that i'm old at all but i think its never to early to start especially when i have been a sun-baby sun-worshipper all of my teen years. I still am..just more cautiously. But anyway i saw some good reviews about Olay total effects 7, so i went to Walgreens & bought some, now the fact that it was $21.99 about made me walk away but i thought 'hey i'll give it one try if i don't love it i'll never buy it again'.
So since that was today i can't really do a review on it just yet but here are my first impressions.
1st impressions
-smaller bottle than i'd like for the price
-nicely designed
-formula is thick & rich
-smells like sunscreen mostly (i got the SPF 15 one)
-skin feels nice immediately after application

So we'll see how i feel about it in a few weeks, i really hope it doesn't break me out, but i'll be sure to let you know.

Technology

It happens all the time.

Someone comes into my office that hasn't been for a long long time. I ask why it is that they have not come for so many years. They reply that they had a bad experience once and that they can't stand the noise of the drill or the feel of the novocaine or something similar to that.

I ask them how long its been and the response comes back that they haven't been in 20 or 30 years.

I then ask them what their cell phone looked like 25 years ago.
After a puzzled look they go on to describe a boxy bulky phone that weighed a ton. I then ask them to describe their personal computer. They go on to talk about floppy disks and commodore 64s.
I then explain that just like in every other area of their life, things move on. Technology advances and things improve. Dentistry of 30 years ago is NOT dentistry of today. I tell them of quieter drills and how we don't use metal fillings anymore and on and on. The real kicker comes in when I tell them that we haven't used novocaine in over 20 years! I don't even know if you can buy the stuff anymore. Even the stuff we use to numb people up with has evolved immensely.

Moral to the story is this. If you have had a bad dental experience in the past. But it was the past of the 80s or even 90s. Please give the dentist another try. Things are so much better now then they have ever been. Technology can be a wonderful thing.

Don't know why I included this one. Just love the 80s hair.
